“Twice a week, I go to a beauty salon and have my hair blown dry. It’s cheaper by far than psychoanalysis, and much more uplifting.”—Nora Ephron
My love affair with Palm Beach, since becoming a full time resident, has been nothing short of a dream come true. After living in LA by way of NYC for the last 13 years, being home on the Island, making my own life here come to fruition, forces me to question why it took me so long to make the leap. There is nothing I do not romanticise about the Island. From my daily pop in to see Erika (possibly the greatest bartender ever) at Buccan, to my perfect little gym Palm Beach Fitness, to personal shopping treks through the Vias, to the most eclectic menagerie of locals this side of Ground Hog Day-nothing about the Island isn’t heaven to me. Then this week, the one thing, the only thing, I do not like about this Island, Florida in general, reared its ugly head. Well, my ugly head. My European, Mediterranean smorgasbord of genes afforded me olive skin, embraceable curves, and the most unacceptable frizzy unruly curly hair imaginable. Always my Achilles heel, the humidity in Florida kicks it to another level. After a season of la di da, now summer brings my most despised foe.
As I complained the other day that my nights of wearing my hair down have officially come to an end, and for me that means keeping the hair in a bun for the next four months, a good friend let me in on the biggest little secret on the Island-Blow and Go Palm Beach. Spawned by the Boca Raton location, the pretty in pink motif and welcoming atmosphere is like a mini spa experience itself. I was familiar with similar places in NYC and LA, my hair comes with me there too, but on the Island? Genius. I popped in on my way to New York for Fashion Week, full afro out and about, shame on my face. The co-owner, and all around adorable Gal, Dominique Dagnone has a gift-for real! I was escorted in to the Royal Poinciana Plaza location like I was an old friend from high school. Everything was just breezy and fun, from the team introducing themselves, to the offering of cappuccino or a crisp glass of white, I knew right away this place was special. Dominique and I chatted the entire time, and I am someone who usually reads while my hair is tended to, but I found her story and that of Blow and Go inspiring. The brain child of former NYC woman about town Brooke Porter, wondering why of all places Florida with its unacceptable humidity four months of the year, teamed up with her Husband, and the Mother Ship in Boca was born. They now have three locations: Boca Raton, Coconut Creek, and now our little town of Palm Beach Island.
Here is the proof of the magic of Blow and Go. Dominique herself blew my hair, it was straight with bounce perfection, so of course I had to take it out on the town where compliments abound. Then, and this is a truly unbelievable phenomenon, I went to New York to brave Fashion Week, running through snow and rain, and rain than snow and back, and somehow my hair stayed absolutely, perfectly straight for three days. I bought a Blow and Go Shower Cap and some dry shampoo for showers, and day three it was as amazing as day one. I sleep with my hair up, and my pony tail bump when I took it down in the morning made no difference. My hair bounced right back to day one sleek and chic. They have a membership and gift cards, which I bought and will be giving to every friend this holiday season. They even come to you, and do make up with Two Faced products-the best on the market. The most impressive part is that they are really reaching out to the Island in the best way possible by doing charity work and sponsoring Island events. They have been a formidable presence on the Island since opening, being involved in The Go Pink Challenge, The JCC, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Family Promise Of South Palm Beach County and many more to come. Always happy to put memberships in the mix for fundraising silent auctions, or sponsoring local civic and regional events at their salons and venues where they have solid relationships. I love these women.
My summer outlook has just hit 110% positive. As the Island reduces size from 35,000 residents to 10.000 come June, my hair will likely be a regular guest on the scene. I have found the answer to the only negative I have found since moving here, and perfection is something an Island Gal can’t resist. So next time you need a 30 minute boost of confidence or your own red carpet moment, pop in to Blow and Go Palm Beach. Tell them their newest regulars at Beyond Style sent you!
